The history of port wine dates back to the 17th century, when British merchants began importing wine from Portugal’s Douro Valley. To preserve the wine during the long sea voyages, brandy was added to it, which stabilised the wine and brought out its sweet, full-bodied character. This method led to the creation of port wine as we know it today.

In the 18th century, Porto established itself as a major trading centre for port wine. Wine production in the region was strictly regulated to ensure quality. These traditions are maintained to this day, and port wine remains a symbol of Portuguese wine culture and craftsmanship.

Port wine can also be used in cooking to add a special depth and complexity to dishes. Try it in sauces for meat dishes, desserts or even in cocktails such as the Port Sour.

Port should be served at a temperature of 12–16°C. It is ideal as a dessert wine, with a cheese platter, or simply as a luxurious treat. It pairs particularly well with blue cheese, nuts, dried fruit and chocolate desserts.

The wine is then aged in casks, with Ruby Ports aged for a shorter period and Tawny Ports for a longer one. Vintage Ports are aged in bottles, which gives them their unique complexity.
