Description
Peychaud's Aromatic Cocktail Bitter is one of the best-known and most traditional bitter specialities in the world. Originally developed in the 19th century by the Haitian pharmacist Antoine Amedée Peychaud in New Orleans, this aromatic bitter is now one of the indispensable classics of international bar culture. It is particularly closely associated with the famous Sazerac cocktail, in which it plays a central role - not only in terms of flavour, but also historically.
Peychaud's bitters are still produced according to a secret original recipe that relies on selected herbs, roots and plant-based ingredients. Compared to other cocktail bitters, such as Angostura, Peychaud's is distinguished by its characteristic reddish colour and its slightly sweet, aniseed-accented aroma with floral and bitter notes. The alcohol content of 35% vol. makes it not only long-lasting, but also intense and rich in flavour.
The compact 0.148-litre bottle can be dispensed perfectly and is ideal for professional bar use as well as for ambitious home bars. Whether for classic drinks or creative home creations - this bitter adds complexity, depth and aromatic balance to cocktails.
Tasting Note
Colour: Deep red with a clear structure.
Nose: Spicy and herbal, with notes of aniseed, clove, cherry and a hint of liquorice.
Flavour: Slightly sweet, followed by a bitter-spicy herbal note, combined with cinnamon, wormwood and subtle floral accents.
Finish: Langs and aromatic, with persistent bitterness, spicy nuances and a slight warmth in the aftertaste.
Peychaud's Aromatic Cocktail Bitter is an essential component of classic American cocktails, especially the Sazerac Rye, where it is combined with rye whiskey, sugar and absinthe to create an iconic flavour experience. It is also ideal for variations of the Old Fashioned, Manhattan or champagne cocktails, where an elegant, bitter depth is required. This bitter is also used in a variety of ways in modern mixology - for example in aperitif-like creations, barrel-aged cocktails or even as a flavourful contrast in dessert sauces or praline fillings. A must for every well-stocked bar and a product with real cult status among bartenders worldwide.
