Mount Gay 1703 BLACK BARREL Barbados Rum is a full-bodied Barbados rum with an alcohol content of 43 per cent, presented in a generous 1-litre bottle complete with a gift box. It is produced by Mount Gay, a historic rum distillery in Barbados whose history dates back to 1703. For the Black Barrel, intense and aromatic rums are blended together, produced using two different distillation methods: both traditional column stills and double retort pot stills are employed. This combination allows lighter and particularly full-bodied distillates to be combined into a complex blend. The rum is then initially matured in ex-American whisky casks before being refined for a further six months in heavily charred ex-bourbon casks.


It is precisely this six-month finish in heavily charred bourbon casks that gives Mount Gay Black Barrel its name and enhances the influence of oak and toasted flavours on the blend. Mount Gay describes the result as ‘Robust & Bold’, thereby positioning this bottling as a particularly expressive variant within the range.The combination of pot-still and column-still rum, two-stage cask maturation and Mount Gay Rum’s long tradition makes this Black Barrel rum from Barbados a versatile premium bottling for enjoying neat or in robust rum cocktails.

Tasting Note

Colour: Rich amber.

Nose: Toasted oak, buttery notes, dried fruit and subtle spices.

Palate: Full-bodied and aromatic with orange peel, black pepper, toasted vanilla, toffee and spicy oak.

Finish: Long-lasting, warm and balanced with spicy, toasted and oaky notes.

Mount Gay 1703 BLACK BARREL is excellent neat, over a large ice cube or in spirit-forward cocktails where the rum’s flavour should remain prominent. It works particularly well in a Rum Old Fashioned, a Rum Manhattan or as a bolder base for classic rum-based drinks. Culinary pairings include BBQ meats, grilled beef, mature cheeses, roasted nuts or dark chocolate.
