Description
The Plantation Rum GUYANA Red Pineau des Charentes Maturation 2008 is an exceptional single-cask rum release from Guyana, at 47.6 per cent, in a 0.7-litre bottle complete with a gift box. The rum was distilled in 2008 from molasses in a historic Port Mourant pot still, a still that originally belonged to the former Port Mourant Distillery. Its elaborate maturation began in Guyana, where the Demerara rum was aged for 9.5 years under tropical conditions in ex-bourbon casks. It was then transported to France, where it underwent further maturation for a further 1.5 years in cognac casks from Maison Ferrand under continental conditions.
Plantation Guyana 2008 underwent its final and particularly distinctive stage of maturation through a one-year finish in ex-Red Pineau des Charentes casks. Overall, ex-bourbon, cognac and Pineau des Charentes casks thus characterise this limited edition bottling. It is precisely the combination of the traditional Port Mourant pot still, tropical and continental maturation, and the unusual Red Pineau des Charentes finish that gives this rum its distinctive character. The complex cask history complements the robust Guyana style with nutty, fruity and slightly tart notes. As a limited-edition Plantation Single Cask Rum, this bottling is aimed particularly at connoisseurs of Demerara rum, historical distillation methods and exceptional cask finishes.
Tasting Note
Colour: Gold to deep amber.
Nose: Complex and nutty with hints of matured wine distillates and rancio, alongside earthy, cocoa and green vegetal notes, and juicy berries.
Palate: Full-bodied and comparatively dry with a light acidity, walnuts, peanuts and apple, complemented by balsamic accents and floral notes of meadow flowers and lilies.
Finish: Long-lasting and complex with molasses, coconut and subtly tart nutty notes.
Due to its complex cask maturation, the Plantation Guyana Red Pineau des Charentes Maturation 2008 is particularly well suited to being enjoyed neat at room temperature, with a few drops of still water added if desired. Culinary pairings include mature hard cheeses, roasted walnuts and hearty meat dishes, which complement its drier, nutty character well. For sweet accompaniments, dark chocolate, apple tart, desserts featuring cocoa or nuts, and coconut desserts are recommended. Thanks to the historic Port Mourant Pot Still and the unusual Red Pineau des Charentes finish, this single-cask bottling is also an interesting choice for Demerara rum tastings, comparative tastings of special cask finishes or sophisticated evenings of indulgence.
