Description
Description
Takamaka EXTRA NOIR Rum is a characterful blended rum from the Seychelles, characterised by a combination of different distillation methods and an unusual wood treatment. It is based on molasses rums from pot stills and column stills, which are blended together. The blend is then first aged in French oak. Another distinctive feature of the production process is the so-called ‘pressing’ with French oak and ex-bourbon casks, which specifically introduces different woody notes into the rum. Takamaka thus combines bolder, ester-rich pot-still components with lighter column-still distillates and a multi-stage wood treatment.
Finally, the Takamaka Extra Noir is left to rest for a further 60 days in ex-French sugarcane rum casks. It is bottled at 43% in a 0.7-litre bottle, with Takamaka expressly avoiding the addition of sugar and chill filtration. This ensures that the original character of the distillates used and the various wood influences remain particularly pronounced. The pot-still components contribute a distinct ester profile, whilst French oak provides spice and the ex-bourbon casks impart vanilla and sweet notes. Takamaka EXTRA NOIR Blended Rum thus combines molasses, two distillation methods, different types of wood and a final period of cask resting to create a powerful rum with a distinctive profile.
Tasting Note
Colour: Dark amber.
Nose: Robust and expressive with spicy woody aromas, subtle hints of esters, vanilla and sweet-like nuances.
Palate: Full-bodied and intense with distinctive ester aromas, spicy French oak and vanilla, accompanied by sweet accents from the former bourbon cask.
Finish: Long-lasting and powerful with spicy oak, vanilla and lingering, funky ester aromas.
Thanks to its robust profile, Takamaka EXTRA NOIR rum is ideal for enjoying neat, as well as in sophisticated long drinks. The producer expressly recommends it for a robust highball, for example with soda or a high-quality ginger ale and plenty of ice. The ester, vanilla and woody notes also hold their own well in a Rum Old Fashioned or other spirit-forward cocktails. When enjoyed neat, a serving temperature of around 18 to 20 °C is recommended, whilst dark chocolate or roasted nuts complement its intense style.
