Description
Description
The Gesellmann Estate, first mentioned in documents dating back to 1719, is a pioneer in Burgenland’s wine-growing industry. Under the leadership of Engelbert Gesellmann, international grape varieties were introduced in the 1980s and aged in French barriques, resulting in iconic wines such as Opus Eximium and Bela Rex. Spanning 50 hectares, the estate is dedicated to supplying discerning wine lovers worldwide, prioritising organic quality and manual labour in harmony with nature. Only the finest grapes are used, including those from ninety-year-old vines, which contribute to the wines’ flavour profile. Vinification is carried out using state-of-the-art cellar technology, whilst knowledge passed down through generations plays a key role.
The 2021 harvest began exceptionally late. It got underway on 23 September with the hand-picking of the Sauvignon Blanc, followed by Chardonnay and the ‘Hochberc Weiss’ (Gemischter Satz). As for the red grape varieties, St. Laurent, Pinot Noir and Zweigelt were harvested first, before Blaufränkisch, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon were picked in mid-October. The harvest was completed on 26 October with the Blaufränkisch Hochberc.
The grapes are harvested exclusively by hand in the autumn. An initial selection takes place in the vineyard itself, before they are checked and sorted again in the cellar using an optical sorting machine. This ensures that only perfect grapes make it into the cellar. Following careful selection, temperature-controlled maceration takes place, followed by ageing in French oak barrels, which imparts additional structure, depth and subtle toasted aromas to the wine. The wine is then bottled and sealed with natural corks.
Tasting Note
A deep, dark ruby red with violet highlights in the glass. On the nose, intense aromas of dark wild berries, ripe cherries and juicy plums, accompanied by subtle spicy notes such as black pepper, cinnamon and a hint of dark chocolate. Dense and complex on the palate, with a well-balanced tannin structure and elegant acidity. A long-lasting finish.
Residual sugar: 1.0 g/l
Acidity: 7.2 g/l.
Serving temperature: 16–18 °C
The Hochberc Blaufränkisch pairs superbly with hearty meat dishes such as saddle of lamb, beef fillet or roast game. It is also an excellent choice with savoury stews and mature cheeses such as mountain cheese or blue cheese.
