The Salzl Merlot Reserve 2021 is a powerful, dense yet elegantly balanced red wine from the Seewinkel region of Burgenland. Made from 100 % Merlot, this wine reflects the full potential of the grape variety – warm, profound, with a silky tannin structure and aromatic depth. The vines are rooted in black earth consisting of loamy silt with a high gravel content, a soil that lends the wine a clear structure, depth of fruit and mineral freshness.

Following traditional maceration in steel tanks at 30°C with a 14-day maceration period, the grapes undergo malolactic fermentation. The wine is then aged for 12 months in small oak barrels made from 100 % new wood – a maturation method that imparts fullness, silky tannins and elegant toasted aromas to the wine. With an alcohol content of 14.5 % vol., the Merlot Reserve impresses with its intense fruit, harmonious depth and an impressive ageing potential until at least 2034.

A truly outstanding Merlot that combines international standards with a Burgenland signature – full of character, ripe fruit and a finish that lingers long in the memory.

Tasting Note

In the glass, the wine displays a deep, dark ruby-garnet colour with an opaque centre and violet highlights. On the nose, it reveals delicate aromas of dried fruit, smoked bacon, candied strawberries, plums, blueberries and subtle herbal notes, accompanied by pleasant woody notes. On the palate, the Merlot is opulent, intensely fruity and juicy, with notes of dark berry jam, dried plums, cassis, a hint of nougat, espresso, cocoa, orange zest and thyme. The velvety tannin structure and perfectly balanced texture round off the tasting experience. The delicately toasty finish ensures a long-lasting, deep aftertaste.

The Salzl Merlot Reserve 2021 is the ideal accompaniment to quickly seared beef, such as entrecôte or steak, as well as to game dishes such as venison and roe deer. Thanks to its intense fruit and supple structure, it pairs superbly with hearty dishes and festive occasions.
