The Winkler-Hermaden Olivin 2021 is an expressive red wine from south-east Styria, and ranks amongst the finest wines produced by the long-established Winkler-Hermaden winery. With its impressive 3-litre bottle presented in an elegant wooden box, it is the perfect wine for special occasions and festive moments. The 33rd vintage of this exceptional wine is made from the Blauer Zweigelt grape variety, which thrives on the mineral-rich soils around the Kapfensteiner Kogel. Named after the semi-precious stone olivine, which occurs as an inclusion in the basalt rock of this region, this wine symbolises the connection between earth, wood and vines – a truly unique expression of terroir.


The grapes were carefully harvested by hand between 23 and 29 September 2020 and, following gentle vinification, developed into a wine that impresses with its finesse and power. It was aged for 24 months in barriques made from Kapfenstein oak, which gave the Olivin its distinctive spice, depth and structure. It was bottled on 25 May 2023 and has been available since 1 September 2023. With an alcohol content of 14% vol., a dry style and the estate’s organic and biodynamic practices – and being vegan as well – it embodies the highest standards of quality and sustainability.

Tasting Note

In the glass, the Winkler-Hermaden Olivin 2021 displays a deep ruby red colour with an almost black core. On the nose, intense aromas of dark cherries, blackberries and plums unfold, accompanied by subtle toasty notes, vanilla, tobacco and a delicate spiciness from the Kapfenstein oak. On the palate, it is full-bodied, dense and well-structured, with elegant tannins, juicy fruit, subtle herbal notes and a long, harmonious finish that impressively underlines its maturity and complexity.

The Winkler-Hermaden Olivin 2021 is an ideal accompaniment to hearty dishes. It pairs superbly with game such as roe deer, red deer or wild boar, as well as with hearty steaks from the barbecue or pan-fried. Stews, spicy roasts and mature hard cheeses also complement its aromatic depth perfectly. The ideal serving temperature is 16–18 °C, allowing its full power, flavour and elegance to unfold. Presented in a large bottle in a wooden box, it is not only a delight to drink but also a stunning gift and collector’s item.
