The Winkler-Hermaden Olivin 2021, presented in an exclusive 5-litre wooden box, is an impressive, powerful red wine from the volcanic region of Styria, which combines origin, craftsmanship and nature in a fascinating way. Its name refers to the green crystal olivine, which is found in volcanic rock and symbolises the connection between vine and oak – a symbiosis poetically described on the label: “Green crystal in volcanic rock unites vine and oak in the wine.” For the oak trees from which the barriques are made also grow in the same climate and on the same soils around Kapfenstein Castle.


The wine is made from the Blauer Zweigelt grape variety, which thrives in the volcanic soils of the Kapfensteiner Kogel. Following a careful hand-harvest, the wine is aged for 24 months in barriques made from Kapfenstein oak, which gives it its incomparable depth and structure. This combination of organic viticulture, regional timber and meticulous winemaking gives the Olivin 2021 its unique character – authentic, elegant and of impressive complexity.

Tasting Note

In the glass, the Winkler-Hermaden Olivin 2021 displays a deep ruby red colour with dark highlights. On the nose, pronounced cherry notes unfold, accompanied by subtle vanilla aromas and a hint of eucalyptus. On the palate, the wine is powerful, dense and full-bodied, with flavours of dark chocolate, sour cherries and ripe berries, underpinned by a subtle spiciness and perfectly integrated oak. The tannins are velvety, and the body is robust with a harmonious structure. The finish is long-lasting and complex – a wine with great ageing potential and an unmistakable character.

The Winkler-Hermaden Olivin 2021 is an ideal accompaniment to game dishes, steaks, braised beef, rack of lamb or mature cheeses. Its dense structure and elegant oak make it a versatile wine for substantial dishes and special occasions. Served at 16–18 °C, it reveals its full aroma and complexity. Thanks to its excellent winemaking and ageing in Kapfenstein oak, this wine has great ageing potential and will continue to develop until 2037.
