The Phantom Smoke marks the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the ‘mighty mouse’, as for the first time this otherwise charming Highland malt ventures into smoky territory. This limited edition combines the typical sweet Highland character with a fascinating depth, created by the special maturation in heavily charred Crocodile Casks.

These casks – named for their deeply charred, reptilian-like surface – are charred to an unusually high degree, causing the wood structure to break down and releasing caramelised wood sugars, spicy smoky notes and a subtle hint of peat. Without actually using peated malt, Douglas Laing succeeds here in creating a smoky character solely through the influence of the casks – a masterful feat of craftsmanship that reinterprets the concept of the Highland Single Malt in an extraordinary way.

With a cask strength of 54.2% vol., and with no colouring or chill filtration, this whisky remains true to the Douglas Laing principle of bottling whiskies as naturally as possible. The Phantom Smoke presents itself as mysterious and multi-layered – a harmonious blend of sweet maltiness, smoky wood and spicy depth that lingers on the palate. A bold approach has also been taken visually: the bottle features a striking, all-round label with silver foil details that perfectly complements the mystical aura of this whisky. Only 3,000 bottles exist worldwide, making this edition a highly sought-after collector’s item.

Tasting Note

Colour: Deep gold with bright amber highlights.

Nose: Smoky and spicy, with notes of smouldering peat, charred wood and roasted spices.

Palate: Full-bodied, complex and well-balanced – sweet Highland malt meets caramelised oak, smoke and a hint of pepper.

Finish: Lang, harmonious and lingering, with spicy wood, delicate sweetness and a subtle wisp of smoke.

The Timorous Beastie Phantom Smoke really comes into its own when paired with grilled steak, beef brisket or smoked salmon. Strong cheeses such as mature Cheddar or Comté also bring out its spicy character. For a sweet finish, we recommend dark chocolate with sea salt or caramelised nuts.
