Description
The Frauwallner Sauvignon Blanc Straden Vulkanland Steiermark DAC 2024 is a precise, terroir-driven Sauvignon Blanc from the Vulkanland region of Styria, which clearly reflects the distinctive character of the Straden sub-region. The grapes are hand-harvested and sorted by hand, ensuring that only healthy, perfectly ripened grapes are used. A maceration period of 2 to 3 days lends the wine additional depth and structure without compromising its freshness. Maturation takes place in a varied manner over six months: 80 per cent in stainless steel tanks to preserve the clear fruit character, and 20 per cent in large, used 500-litre wooden casks, which lend the wine body and subtle complexity. With an alcohol content of 13 per cent, this Vulkanland Steiermark DAC is well-balanced, taut and characterised by a distinct ease of drinking.
Fine filtration ensures clarity and precision, whilst the screw cap preserves freshness and purity of flavour. The 2024 vintage is designed for longevity and will reach its optimal drinking window between 2025 and 2030. Particularly when served at a temperature of 10 to 12 °C, this Frauwallner Sauvignon Blanc reveals its interplay of fruit, acidity and mineral depth, which is typical of the region’s volcanic soils.
Tasting Note
In the glass, a clear, pale yellow with a fresh, vibrant appearance. On the nose, blackcurrant, gooseberry and yellow pepper, accompanied by subtle spice. On the palate, it is taut and precise, with crisp acidity, a dense structure and delicate, smoky basalt minerality. The finish is long-lasting, invigorating and characterised by exceptional drinkability.
Acidity: 5.4 g/l
Residual sugar: 2.3 g/l
The Frauwallner Sauvignon Blanc Straden Vulkanland Steiermark DAC 2024 pairs superbly with grilled chicken breast, where its acidity and minerality provide balance. It also pairs very well with tomato risotto, as the wine’s fruit and spice perfectly complement the tomato flavours. As a typical regional touch, it also harmonises excellently with a redcurrant juice, which picks up on the wine’s cassis notes. Furthermore, this Sauvignon Blanc from the Vulkanland region shines as a standout choice when a structured, mineral-driven white wine with a clear provenance and great drinking pleasure is called for.
