Aberlour History

The origins of Aberlour

The story of Aberlour begins in 1826, when James Gordon and Peter Weir founded the distillery in the picturesque Speyside region. The distillery is located at the confluence of the Lour Burn and the River Spey, which gives it access to pure spring water and ideal climatic conditions for whisky production. For more than 190 years, Aberlour has stood for excellent quality and exceptional taste.

Since the company was founded, the particularly soft and slightly sweet taste of Aberlour whisky has never changed. The distillery has the largest pot stills in Scotland, with a capacity of more than 12,000 liters. This gives the raw spirit a strong alcohol content of around 70% and a sweet, smooth taste. Cask ageing at Aberlour is also traditionally carried out according to the double-casking principle. The malts are initially stored separately in original sherry and bourbon casks and then blended after some time. This creates a particularly fruity taste of the Speyside malts with a strong sherry influence.

The convincing and renowned standard product of the Scottish whisky distillery is the Aberlour 10 year old. This soft, fruity single malt is regularly highly rated and took first place in the up to 12 years category at the 2007 World Whisky Awards.
The slightly older single malt Aberlour 18 year old is currently the producer's premium product and is only matured in selected casks. The long storage time and cask maturation give it special aromas reminiscent of caramel and dark chocolate. Despite its spicy and woody finish, the Aberlour 18 year old retains a soft and round taste.
