Both Niepoort’s wines and the Fabelhaft Linie come from the Douro Valley, one of the oldest and most prestigious wine regions in the world. The Douro Valley, renowned for its steep, terraced vineyards and unique microclimate, offers ideal conditions for growing grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca. The Fabelhaft brand was launched by Dirk Niepoort and is a remarkable example of the winery’s creative side. Fabelhaft Tinto, the best-known wine in this Linie, was specially developed to make the versatility and modern style of Douro wines accessible to a wide audience. The name ‘Fabelhaft’ and the distinctive labels featuring illustrations by Wilhelm Busch reflect the playful yet sophisticated approach to winemaking. Niepoort is one of Portugal’s most renowned and oldest wineries. Founded in 1842 by Eduard Kebe, the company was later taken over by Franciscus Marius van der Niepoort, whose family continues to run the winery to this day. Over generations, Niepoort has preserved the tradition of winemaking in the Douro Valley whilst breaking new ground to continuously improve the quality and diversity of its wines. Dirk Niepoort, the fifth generation of the family, has led the winery to international renown by introducing innovative techniques and a deep understanding of the terroir.

The grapes are harvested by hand and traditionally trodden by foot in lagares – stone fermentation vats – to gently extract the juice. The wines mature in a combination of large casks and smaller oak barrels, which gives them depth, complexity and a balanced structure. Niepoort is renowned for its philosophy, which is based on sustainability, respect for the terroir and the pursuit of the highest quality.
