Read all about the history of Tequila here

Tequila, named after the city of Tequila in the state of Jalisco near the Pacific coast, has an exciting history dating back to the 16th century. At that time, Spanish colonialists discovered the versatile usability of the blue Weber agave, whose sweet heart they initially distilled illegally. It was not until the 17th century that tequila production was legalized through royal taxation.
During Mexico's independence in 1821, buying tequila was difficult as Spanish spirits were hard to come by. But with growing independence, demand for the local agave spirit also increased. In the 19th century, tequila production flourished, and the drink developed into a symbol of Mexican identity.

A particularly interesting fact: The first tequila brand officially registered in 1873 was "José Cuervo," a name that is now known worldwide. In 1974, tequila received a protected designation of origin – only tequila produced in certain regions of Mexico and from the blue Weber agave may be called as such. This makes tequila the first drink in Mexico to receive such certification, underscoring its importance for Mexican culture and tradition.

Things to Know Before Buying Tequila: Drinking Culture and Rituals

Tequila is not just a party classic, but is enjoyed worldwide in various, often traditional ways. When buying tequila, you can find the right variety for every drinking ritual:

  • With salt and lemon – The classic: moisten the back of your hand, sprinkle with salt, lick it off, take a shot of tequila, and then bite into a lemon slice. This ritual mellows the sharp notes and brings out the flavors.
  • Mexico: The "Bandera" – A set of three consisting of lime juice (green), tequila (white), and Sangrita (red), symbolizing the Mexican flag. You drink in this order and experience a mix of acidity, spice, and agave aroma.
  • With coffee beans – Especially popular in Sweden: Here, tequila is served with one or two coffee beans, which are lightly chewed. The bitterness of the beans complements the aroma and enhances the taste.
  • With tomato juice or Sangrita – A popular variation in Mexico is tequila with Sangrita, a spicy-hot tomato juice. The Sangrita brings an aromatic heat and enhances the taste experience.

Whether you want to enjoy tequila neat, as a shot, or according to one of these international rituals, when buying tequila, you can find the right variety for every occasion and taste.

The Cultural Significance of Tequila

Tequila is far more than just a drink – it's a symbol of Mexican identity and pride. As an important part of traditional festivals and rituals, tequila accompanies celebrations such as Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) and other family festivities, where it is enjoyed as a sign of community and togetherness.

Tequila is also deeply rooted in Mexican myths: The legend of Mayahuel, the Aztec goddess of fertility, tells how she transformed into the first agave plant to give humanity the agave drink. According to another legend, lightning struck an agave and, through divine intervention, produced the first fermented agave drink. These stories and the spiritual connection to the agave fields – which are said to be guarded by the chaneques, small forest spirits – lend tequila a symbolic depth and make it a living expression of Mexican cultural heritage.

What makes a good tequila?

Tequila can be enjoyed both in cocktails and neat. When you buy tequila, you'll notice a unique aroma, unlike that of vodka, gin or rum. Tequila is produced in some regions of Mexico. If you want to buy a high-quality tequila, you'll recognize it by its pleasant and mild taste. This high-proof drink is made from a high proportion of blue agave, which is available in various stages of ripeness. After distillation, silver or clear tequila is bottled, while golden tequila needs to mature a little longer. Some varieties are stored in barrels for up to three years after bottling, where they mature before you can buy the tequila. Therefore, the quality of tequila depends especially on the length of the ripening period. The most important factors are the taste and the associated aroma. The color can tell you a lot about the quality of the tequila; a clear tequila, for example, has not matured long in barrels. If you buy a silver tequila, it is very suitable as a base for cocktails, whereas a brown or golden tequila can be enjoyed neat. The quality of a tequila can not only be determined by its taste but also by its pleasant smell. If you have the opportunity when buying tequila, smell the varieties: The scent has a pleasant agave aroma and a typical salty note. Moreover, a high-quality tequila does not sting the nose, but is rather pleasant and makes you want more. The smell can be used to determine the quality of the ingredients that developed during distillation when buying tequila. In addition, a high-quality tequila has more aromas that develop during maturation, and thus a better taste. Some varieties have a fruity note, which sometimes also reveals a woody taste. Overall, however, it can be said that quality is a subjective matter and depends on habit. Buying tequila is therefore very individual.

What are the different types of tequila?

The varieties of tequila depend on the region in Mexico. A spirit can only be called tequila if it originates from specific regions in Mexico. Therefore, you can buy different varieties of tequila, such as Ultra-Aged, Extra-Aged, Aged, Gold, or Silver Tequila.

Silver tequila is also known as Plata or Blanco. This variety is bottled directly after distillation without barrel aging. If you want to buy a relatively inexpensive tequila that is very suitable for cocktails and has a mild taste, this is the right one for you. Gold tequila is also known as clear tequila and contains added sugar coloring and other additives. This achieves a matured aroma and a strong coloration.

You can also buy a relatively inexpensive tequila with this variety, which has a smooth taste and is reminiscent of an aged tequila. Tequila Aged is also known as Reposado, which matures for more than two months in oak barrels without additives. With aging, the tequila acquires strong and additional aromas. This variety has a strong color, an intense taste, and is not too expensive either. You will notice this when you want to buy the tequila. Basically, Extra-Aged Tequila is produced in a similar way to Aged Tequila.

However, the aging period in barrels is at least one to a maximum of three years. With this variety, the longer aging creates a special woody note, a more intense aroma, and a stronger color. However, this variety is considerably more expensive compared to the other varieties. Ultra-Aged Tequila is available in different aging levels of three years, ten years, or more than ten years. This variety develops a very intense taste, has a pleasant aroma, and diverse flavors. If you buy this tequila, you get one of the finer varieties that is highly sought after by connoisseurs.

Tequila and its Categories

Only blue agave may be used for tequila production. According to the government agency Consejo Regulador del Tequila A.C., two classes are distinguished: For Mixto Tequila, at least 51% of the sugar must come from blue agave, while the other sugar content can originate from other sources such as cane sugar. Unlike 100% Agave Azul Tequila, this may be bottled in bottles and tanks before you can buy the tequila. 100% Agave Azul may only be bottled and shipped in bottles. For particularly high-quality tequilas such as Reposado and Añejo Tequila, the barrels may only be opened and bottled under supervision. Through an additional classification by increasing maturation period, it is divided into five categories:

  • Class 1: Blanco, Silver or Plata: If you buy one of these tequilas, you will receive a white, clear tequila that is bottled immediately after distillation.
  • Class 2: Gold, Joven or Oro: This is a blend of white and already matured tequilas (from classes 3, 4, and 5). Up to 1% of the total amount can be mixed with caramel coloring or oak extract.
  • Class 3: Aged or Reposado: With this variant, you can buy a tequila that has been aged in oak wood for at least 2 months.
  • Class 4: Extra-Aged or Añejo Tequila: This is a tequila aged in oak wood for at least 1-3 years, whereby the vessel size must not exceed 600 liters.
  • Class 5: Ultra-Aged or Extra-Añejo Tequila: Here you will buy a tequila aged for at least 3 years.

Which Tequila to Buy for Which Occasion?

The different varieties are suitable for different occasions. If you buy a silver tequila, it is ideal for cocktails such as margaritas. Although the silver variety has fewer aromas, it is perfectly suited for cocktails. If you buy golden tequila, it is for pure enjoyment, consumed in the classic way with salt and lemon. Compared to the silver variety, the golden version is characterized by a smooth and intense taste. For connoisseurs, an aged tequila is the ideal drink. Feel free to also check out our Tequila gift sets to delight a lover. With us, you can buy aged tequila in countless varieties, each with its own unique aromas.

How much does Tequila cost?

Tequila is available in different quality and price ranges. If you want to buy inexpensive tequila, you can get it for as little as 10 euros. Tequila doesn't necessarily have to be expensive, and an affordable option is great for cocktails. A reposado (golden) tequila costs between 10 and 20 euros and can be enjoyed neat without hesitation. If you buy this tequila, you will notice that it is a bit more expensive, but it has a more complex taste. However, the price-performance ratio is still reasonable. It can be enjoyed neat or mixed into delicious cocktails. In a higher price segment, up to 200 euros, the subtleties and peculiarities of a tequila become more apparent. An expensive tequila usually contains no additives and is noticeably more pleasant in terms of smell, color, and taste. Furthermore, you can buy tequila that is available from 200 euros upwards. These are usually limited editions that are only available in small quantities. Therefore, such varieties are generally preferred by collectors. You can not only buy tequila from us, no. You can also buy rum from us. If you are a fan of strong flavors, you will love our rum varieties. We also have a wide range of liqueurs in our assortment. We have something for every palate. What's the bottom line on buying tequila?

If you want to buy tequila, it can be drunk neat or in cocktails. This high-proof drink has a unique taste and is consumed worldwide. Good tequila comes from different regions of Mexico and must contain at least 51 percent blue agave. The more blue agave used, the higher quality tequila you buy. In addition, high-quality tequilas contain no additives and mature for several months or years in oak barrels. A mature tequila is mainly drunk neat, and it smells good and tastes excellent. However, this is a subjective assessment and must be evaluated individually by each person. If you want to buy an affordable tequila, it is available from as little as 10 Euros in high quality. However, the quality also increases with the price. In the delicando online tequila shop, a large number of variants of different types and price ranges are available. When it comes to buying tequila, delicando.com is the first address for quality and high-proof drinks. A unique pleasure for all senses for almost every occasion and individual taste.
