Legal reasons and significance for the German market

In German-speaking countries, the internationally renowned Diplomático brand is marketed under the name Botucal – a consequence of a legal trademark dispute. Another company holds the trademark rights in Germany to a similarly sounding name, which is why Diplomático is not permitted to sell its products in this country under its usual name. To avoid confusion and ensure continued distribution, the brand was renamed in Germany.

The name Botucal is derived from the term ‘Botuka’, which in the indigenous language of the region means ‘green hill’ – a reference to the rum’s natural origins in Venezuela. Despite the name change, the quality, origin and production remain identical to the international Diplomático brand. For consumers, this means: Botucal is essentially the same premium rum – just under a different name.

Diplomático Reserva Exclusiva is regarded as the brand’s flagship product and delights connoisseurs worldwide with its rich, complex flavour profile. From Don Juancho to an international brand

The history of Botucal Rum – known internationally as Diplomático – begins with the figure of Don Juancho Nieto Meléndez, a 19th-century Venezuelan gentleman who devoted himself passionately to the exploration of fine spirits and rum production. At his Hacienda Botucal, he began developing his own recipes and collecting, ageing and refining various rums – a tradition that remains the foundation of the brand to this day.

Diplomático Rum was officially launched in 1959 with the founding of Destilerías Unidas S.A. (DUSA) in Venezuela. Named after the freedom fighter Simón Bolívar, whose portrait adorned the labels for many years, the brand quickly became a symbol of Venezuelan rum-making. Produced at the Hacienda Botucal, the rum combines traditional craftsmanship, regional ingredients and sophisticated ageing methods.
