Matthew Gloag, the grandson of the founder and namesake of the brand, took over the family business in 1896, almost a century after it was founded in 1800.

Just one year later, he created a new whisky blend, which he called "The Grouse Brand", in the expectation that many hunters would come to Perth during the hunting season. His daughter designed the matching label, which shows the Scottish national bird, the grouse. The whisky immediately became very popular and sold so well that after just a few years, the name was changed to "The Famous Grouse" and the word "brand" was dropped.

This whisky is the successor to the well-known "The Black Grouse" and is characterised by a higher proportion of peated malts, including a rare bottling from Glenturret. These carefully selected, peaty malts give the "Smoky Black" its characteristically smoky yet smooth flavour. The profile is complemented by exceptional grain whiskies, which harmoniously round off the flavour and give the whisky its special depth and complexity.

Tasting Note

Colour: Deep gold.

Nose: Aromas of peat smoke and liquorice, accompanied by subtle notes of citrus and spices.

Flavour: Strong and smoky with nuances of dark chocolate, oak and a hint of dried fruit.

Finish: Medium length and smoky, with a pleasant aftertaste of sweet vanilla and a slight peppery flavour.

The Famous Grouse SMOKY BLACK is ideal for combining with strong dishes such as grilled meat or spicy barbecues. The intense smoky flavour harmonises particularly well with the aroma of smoked cheese or a rustic pot roast. For an unusual dessert pairing, combine it with a rich chocolate cake or chocolate mousse, as the bitter notes of the chocolate add a lovely depth to the smoky tones of the whisky.
