After Nelson was fatally shot by a French sniper at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, his body was placed in a barrel of alcohol, presumably rum, to preserve it on the long journey back to England. But when the ship arrived, all the rum had disappeared - the sailors are said to have secretly tapped the barrel and drunk the fine spirit through straws.
