Juan del Aguila fought alongside Red Hugh O’Donnell and The Great Earl during a gruelling two-month campaign at the Battle of Kinsale, the final battle in England’s conquest of Gaelic Ireland and the climax of the Nine Years’ War.

During this time, he lived in Portney’s Lane, Cork, and was much loved by the locals. Upon his return to Spain, whilst helping wounded troops at his own expense, he died in 1602.

Spanish Earl Single Malt Irish Whiskey is initially matured for almost four years in ex-bourbon casks and is then divided between two finishing casks: one ex-Imperial stout and one aged, golden Jamaican rum. The two triple-distilled Irish whiskies are recombined after a period of at least three months and bottled.

The stout element is inspired by Juan del Aguila’s time in Cork, which has been world-famous for stout production for hundreds of years, whilst the rum – the favourite drink of seafarers of old – lends a sweet toffee note to the stout’s dark chocolate flavour.

Tasting Note

Colour: Light gold.

Nose: Dark chocolate, aromas of coffee, strawberries, cream and dried fruit.

Palate: Coffee, dark chocolate, creamy Irish stout, notes of tiramisu, dried fruits such as figs, raisins, ripe bananas and tropical fruits.

Finish: Long-lasting with raisins and a hint of spices.
