Description
In 1790, 25-year-old George Sandeman, the son of a wealthy Scottish carpenter, asked his father for a loan of £300. His aim was to set up as a wine merchant in London. George Sandeman then founded the Sandeman company, which later became one of the world's leading suppliers of port and sherry.
From the outset, Sandeman specialised in the production and trade of port and sherry. Unlike today, he did not run his business from his own offices, but from Tom's Coffee House in Birchin Lane in London. At that time, business was often conducted on the basis of a "gentleman's word". George Sandeman quickly gained an excellent reputation, which still characterises the Sandeman company today.
Sandeman 40 Years OLD TAWNY Porto is an exquisite cuvée made from the grape varieties Tinta Amarela, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cão and Touriga Franca. Produced according to the traditional Porto wine method, the hand-picked grapes are destemmed and fermented at a controlled temperature. Maceration on the skins extracts the best flavours and structures.
The addition of wine alcohol at the optimum time ensures a perfect balance between body and bouquet. After the harvest, the wines are matured in the historic oak barrels of the Sandeman winery in Vila Nova de Gaia. Over the years, the wines selected for this exceptional tawny are regularly tasted and refined.
The final blend consists of wines aged between 30 and 55 years, creating a distinctive, deep and elegant Porto that is characterised by its complexity, unique identity and characteristic style.
