Description
In 1790, 25-year-old George Sandeman, the son of a wealthy Scottish carpenter, asked his father for a loan of £300. His aim was to set up as a wine merchant in London. George Sandeman then founded the Sandeman company, which later became one of the world's leading suppliers of port and sherry.
From the outset, Sandeman specialised in the production and trade of port and sherry. Unlike today, he did not run his business from his own offices, but from Tom's Coffee House in Birchin Lane in London. At that time, business was often conducted on the basis of a "gentleman's word". George Sandeman quickly gained an excellent reputation, which still characterises the Sandeman company today.
Sandeman 20 Years OLD TAWNY Porto is a masterful cuvée made from the grape varieties Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cão, Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional. Produced according to the traditional Porto wine method, the hand-picked grapes are destemmed and gently crushed before fermentation to extract the best flavours. Fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature with maceration on the skins. Wine alcohol is added at the ideal time, carefully selected by the winemaker to achieve the perfect sweetness and structure.
After the harvest, the wines remain in the Douro Valley until spring and then mature in the centuries-old oak barrels of the Sandeman winery in Vila Nova de Gaia. Over the years, the wines for this special Tawny Port are carefully tasted, analysed and perfected. The final blend consists of a selection of wines aged between 15 and 40 years. The result is an expressive 20 Years OLD TAWNY.
