Barceló Imperial ONYX Ron Dominicano is a premium Dominican rum from Ron Barceló, which differs from the classic Imperial in terms of its unique blend of raw materials and cask selection. It is produced in the Dominican Republic from sugarcane juice extracted from sugarcane grown on the distillery’s own fields. For the Imperial ONYX, selected, long-aged rums are blended together. Ageing takes place in heavily charred former American white oak bourbon casks, whose intense toasted and roasted aromas significantly shape the character of the bottling. The name ONYX refers to black onyx stones through which the rum is filtered before bottling.

At 38% in the 0.7-litre bottle, the Barceló Imperial ONYX is a characterful blended rum from the Dominican Republic. The combination of sugar cane juice, re-charred ex-bourbon casks and onyx filtration is the key distinguishing feature of this bottling. Ron Barceló is one of the Dominican Republic’s most traditional rum producers and looks back on a history that began with the company’s foundation by Julián Barceló in 1930. The Imperial ONYX expands the well-known Imperial Linie with a bolder variant, in which the influence of heavily charred American oak casks takes centre stage. As such, this bottling is aimed at connoisseurs of mature Dominican blended rums with a distinctive cask character.

Tasting Note

Colour: Dark mahogany with amber highlights.

Nose: Intense and complex, with notes of coffee, dried fruit, vanilla and subtle toasted notes, accompanied by spicy hints of oak.

Palate: Full-bodied and smooth with caramel, vanilla, dark fruits and coffee, complemented by robust roasted flavours and spicy oak.

Finish: Long-lasting, warm and harmonious, with vanilla, coffee and delicate lingering notes of toasting and wood.

The Barceló Imperial ONYX is particularly well suited to being enjoyed neat at room temperature or over a large ice cube. In terms of food pairings, dark chocolate, roasted nuts, desserts featuring coffee or caramel, and full-flavoured cheeses complement its distinctive cask profile. This Dominican rum can also be used as the base for a high-quality rum Old Fashioned.
