The Salzl Syrah Reserve 2020 is a powerful yet exceptionally harmonious Austrian quality red wine from Burgenland that interprets the international Syrah grape variety in a profound and elegant style. Produced at the renowned Salzl winery, this vintage reflects the consistent quality philosophy of the estate as well as the special climatic conditions of the region. The vines grow on sandy soil, which allows good aeration and gives the wine its juicy structure and fine mineral tension.


The single-varietal Syrah is vinified traditionally, with maceration in steel tanks at 30 °C, a maceration period of 14 days and subsequent malolactic fermentation to build up depth, balance and structure. The wine is matured for 12 months in small oak barrels made from 100% new wood, which gives the dry red wine complexity, density and a precisely integrated roasted flavour. With an alcohol content of 14%, the Salzl Syrah Reserve 2020 is powerful, balanced and smooth. The defined drinking age of 2024 to 2032 emphasises the high ageing potential of this red wine from Austria. Bottling in August 2023 marks the end of a precisely managed ageing process.

Tasting Note

In the glass, it is a strong dark ruby-garnet colour with an opaque core and a delicate violet rim. The nose reveals an intense interplay of aromas of dark fruit, juniper, ripe dark cherry fruit, black olives and subtle hints of roast beef. The palate presents a powerful fruit extract with dried plums, black cherries, blackberries and chocolate, accompanied by a fine tannin structure, juicy texture, subtle herbal spice and fresh minerality. The finish is extremely long-lasting with nuances of nougat, liquorice and harmoniously integrated roasted aromas in a fruity, spicy finish.

The Salzl Syrah Reserve 2020 is ideal as a powerful accompaniment to braised game, beef with dark sauces or classic hare, where its depth and structure really come into their own. This dry Syrah also unfolds its full expressive power with slowly braised meat dishes, intense sauces or savoury roasts. At a serving temperature of 16 to 18 °C, the wine is balanced, complex and harmonious and is recommended for both festive menus and sophisticated moments of enjoyment.
