The history of Smirnoff Vodka began in 1910, when Vladimir Smirnov took over the running of the distillery following the death of his father, Pyotr Smirnov. However, the October Revolution marked a drastic turning point, as the distillery was confiscated by the government and the family was forced to flee to Constantinople. There, Vladimir managed to set up a new distillery and resume production.

Four years later, the family moved to Lviv, where they continued their business. In 1925, the spelling of the name was officially changed to ‘Smirnoff’, a move that facilitated access to international markets. In the late 1930s, Smirnoff began to be exported to numerous European countries, which led to the brand gaining increasing recognition.
