Description
The Gesellmann estate, documented since 1719, is a pioneer in Burgenland viticulture. Under the management of Engelbert Gesellmann, international grape varieties were introduced in the 1980s and matured in French barriques, resulting in iconic wines such as Opus Eximium and Bela Rex. With 50 hectares, the winery is geared towards supplying discerning wine lovers worldwide, focussing on organic quality and manual work in harmony with nature. Only the best grape material is processed, including grapes from ninety-year-old vines, which contribute to the flavour structure of the wines. Vinification is carried out using state-of-the-art cellar technology, with the knowledge passed down through generations playing an important role.
The harvest of the 2021 vintage began exceptionally late. The starting signal was given on 23 September with the hand-picking of Sauvignon Blanc, followed by Chardonnay and the "Hochberc Weiss" (Gemischter Satz). The red wine varieties St. Laurent, Pinot Noir and Zweigelt were the first to be harvested before Blaufränkisch, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon were picked in mid-October. The harvest was completed on 26 October with the Blaufränkisch Hochberc.
The grapes are harvested exclusively by hand in autumn. An initial selection takes place in the vineyard before they are checked and sorted again in the cellar using an optical selection system. This ensures that only perfect grapes reach the cellar. After careful selection, temperature-controlled mash fermentation takes place, followed by ageing in French oak barrels, which gives the wine additional structure, depth and fine roasted flavours. The wine is then bottled and sealed with a natural cork.
Tasting Note
Deep dark ruby red with violet reflections in the glass. Intense aromas of dark forest berries, ripe cherries and juicy plums on the nose, accompanied by fine spicy notes such as black pepper, cinnamon and a hint of dark chocolate. Dense and complex on the palate, with a balanced tannin structure and elegant acidity. Long and persistent on the finish.
Residual sugar: 1.0 g/l
Acidity: 7.2 g/litre.
Drinking temperature: 16-18 °C
The Hochberc Blaufränkisch is an excellent accompaniment to hearty meat dishes such as rack of lamb, fillet of beef or roast game. It is also an excellent choice with savoury stews and mature cheeses such as mountain cheese or blue cheese.
