The Salzl Merlot Reserve 2021 is a powerful, dense yet elegantly balanced red wine from the Seewinkel region of Burgenland. Made from 100% Merlot, this wine reflects the full potential of the grape variety - warm, deep, with a silky tannin structure and aromatic density. The vines are rooted in black soil consisting of loamy silt with a high gravel content, a soil that gives the wine a clear structure, depth of fruit and mineral freshness.

After traditional maceration, the grapes are vinified in steel tanks at 30 °C with a 14-day maceration period and then undergo malolactic fermentation. Further ageing takes place for 12 months in small oak barrels made from 100% new wood - an ageing method that gives the wine fullness, silky tannins and an elegant roasted flavour. With 14.5% alcohol by volume, the Merlot Reserve impresses with its intense fruit, harmonious depth and impressive ageing potential until at least 2034.

A true Spitz Merlot that bears both international standards and the Burgenland signature - full of character, ripe fruit and with a finish that lingers for a long time.

Tasting Note

In the glass, the wine is a deep dark ruby-garnet colour with an opaque core and violet reflections. The nose reveals delicate aromas of dried fruit, smoked bacon, candied strawberries, plums, blueberries and fine herbal spice, accompanied by a pleasant woody flavour. On the palate, the Merlot is opulent, intensely fruity and juicy, with notes of dark berry confit, dried plums, cassis, a hint of nougat, espresso, cocoa, orange zest and thyme. The velvety tannin structure and perfectly balanced texture round off the flavour experience. The finely toasted finish ensures a long, deep finish.

The Salzl Merlot Reserve 2021 is the ideal partner for quick-roasted beef, such as entrecôte or steak, as well as game dishes such as venison and roe deer. Its intense fruit and smooth structure make it an excellent accompaniment to hearty dishes and festive occasions. Serve at 16-18 °C in a large red wine glass - for an intensely enjoyable, harmoniously matured and elegant red wine experience with depth and style.
