The Gaja Sperss Barolo DOP 2020 with 14% vol. in a 0.75-litre bottle is an iconic Barolo from the heart of Piedmont that bears the unmistakable signature of Angelo Gaja - one of Italy's most important winemakers. It comes from the Langhe wine-growing region, more precisely from the Serralunga d'Alba vineyard, which is known for its powerful, structured and long-lasting Baroli. The wine is made exclusively from the noble Nebbiolo grape variety and impressively demonstrates how Gaja combines tradition and modern vinification to create perfect harmony.


The vines are deeply rooted in soils of marl, clay and limestone, which give the wine its distinctive minerality and depth. After maceration in steel tanks - one week at 28 °C and a further two weeks at 17 °C - the Gaja Sperss 2020 matures for 12 months in barriques before being aged for another 12 months in large oak barrels. This two-stage ageing process ensures complexity, elegance and perfectly integrated tannins. With a maturation period until 2036, this Barolo has exceptional ageing potential and is one of Gaja's great classics - powerful, precise and timeless in its expressiveness.

Tasting Note

In the glass, the Gaja Sperss Barolo 2020 is a brilliant, bright ruby-garnet colour. The nose reveals dense, complex aromas of ripe plums, rose petals and truffles, accompanied by fine smoky notes and a subtle spiciness. On the palate, the wine is impressively structured, with grippy, dense tannins and a firm core that is typical of the wines from Serralunga d'Alba. It is powerful, deep and elegant at the same time, with a perfect balance between fruit, flavour and structure. The finish is long, earthy and persistent, with a mineral aftertaste and fine, balsamic complexity.

The Gaja Sperss Barolo DOP 2020 is a majestic accompaniment to fine meat dishes, especially fillet of beef, braised lamb, venison medallions or osso buco.
