Sekt production experienced a boom when German winegrowers adapted the traditional methods from Champagne and tailored them to local conditions.

Today, Germany is the largest producer of sparkling wine in Europe, and Sekt has established itself as an integral part of German wine culture.

Sparkling wine can also be used in cooking to add a zesty touch to dishes. Try using it in sauces for fish dishes, as a base for sorbets, or in desserts such as sparkling wine jelly with fresh berries.

Sparkling wine should be served well chilled at a temperature of 6–8°C. Use tall, slender glasses (flutes) to preserve the bubbles and concentrate the flavours. Sparkling wine is produced through a second fermentation in the bottle or in a tank, much like champagne and prosecco. This fermentation creates the characteristic bubbles and gives the sparkling wine its refreshing effervescence. Sparkling wine can be made from various grape varieties, including Riesling, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The quality and flavour of the sparkling wine depend on the method used and the grapes.

The production of sparkling wine begins with the harvest of the grapes, which are gently pressed. The must undergoes primary fermentation in stainless steel tanks to produce the base wines. For secondary fermentation, the wine is fermented either in the bottle (traditional method) or in pressure tanks (Charmat method). Sugar and yeast are added to produce carbon dioxide. After the second fermentation, the sparkling wine is filtered, dosed if necessary, and finally bottled.
