The recipe for this iconic drink, which was developed by the pharmacist Kunze in the mid-18th century, was created when he was looking for a panacea. The drink, which quickly gained popularity, received royal authorisation from Empress Catherine II in 1781, meaning that it was enjoyed not only in Russia but also across generations and still has a firm place in tradition today.

An interesting fact about Riga Black Balsam is that people used to believe in its medicinal properties. It was used to treat a variety of ailments, from colds and flu to digestive problems and even snake bites. Although no medicinal claims can be made today, its unique flavour remains, and it's definitely one to try.

This basic recipe, which consists of a careful blend of herbs, flowers and oils, is refined in the Riga Black Balsam Currant by the addition of natural blackcurrant juice. This combination gives the balm a fruity note that harmoniously complements the traditional flavour profile and gives it a special depth.
