Description
The Gesellmann Opus Eximium No. 35 2022 is a masterful Austrian red wine cuvée from Burgenland that bears the signature of the traditional Gesellmann winery. For over three decades, the "Opus Eximium" has been recomposed year after year, with each edition reflecting the characteristics of the vintage. The 2022 cuvée consists of 60% Blaufränkisch, 30% Zweigelt and 10% St. Laurent - three grape varieties that are typical of the Carnuntum region and Burgenland and are vinified here at the highest level.
The grapes come from 30 to 70-year-old vines, which develop their characteristic intensity when deeply rooted in mineral-rich soils. The manual harvest began at the end of September with the St. Laurent, followed by the Zweigelt, and ended at the beginning of October with the Blaufränkisch. Each grape variety was vinified separately. After spontaneous fermentation and traditional mash fermentation in steel tanks, malolactic fermentation took place in oak barrels. The wine then matured for 24 months in small oak barrels before being blended as a cuvée and aged for a further 2 months in large wooden barrels. It was finally bottled in June 2025. At 14.5% vol., it is powerful, complex and elegant at the same time - a wine with great ageing potential.
Tasting Note
In the glass, the Gesellmann Opus Eximium No. 35 2022 is a deep, dark ruby-garnet colour with violet reflections. The nose reveals intense aromas of blackberry confit, fine precious wood spice and subtle herbal notes. It is juicy and fresh on the palate, with elegant red berry fruit, fine acidity and well-integrated tannins. The finish is spicy, harmonious and impressively long.

This Austrian red wine cuvée is an excellent accompaniment to strong dishes such as dark meat, lamb or game. Thanks to its structure and elegance, it is also an excellent accompaniment to braised beef or mature cheese. Served at 16-18 °C, it unfolds its full potential and shows that it is not only enjoyable now, but also has excellent ageing potential.
