History of the Ardbeg Distillery

The history of Ardbeg began in 1815 on the Isle of Islay. Founded by John McDougall, Ardbeg developed over two centuries into one of Scotland’s most iconic distilleries. Following periods of inactivity and changes of ownership, Ardbeg was acquired by Glenmorangie PLC in 1997 and extensively modernised. Today, Ardbeg combines traditional methods with modern technology – whilst remaining uncompromising in terms of quality and character. The distillery is situated in a secluded bay and benefits from the island’s pure, natural environment, which is reflected in the quality of the whisky. Over the years, Ardbeg has made a name for itself with its intensely peaty and smoky single malts.
