The Winkler-Hermaden Olivin 2021 is a fascinating, profound red wine from the volcanic region of Styria that combines origin, craftsmanship and nature in perfect harmony. The wine bears the name of a green crystal in the volcanic rock, which symbolises the connection between vine and oak - because not only the grapes, but also the oaks for the barriques come from the same volcanic soils around Kapfenstein Castle. This unique symbiosis is reflected in the multi-layered character of the Olivin: powerful, elegant and characterised by its unmistakable origin.


The Blauer Zweigelt grapes come from various vineyards on the Kapfensteiner Kogel and are cultivated according to organic guidelines. After careful hand-picking, the wine is aged for 24 months in 300-litre Kapfenstein oak barriques, which gives the wine structure, depth and aromatic complexity. The combination of the mineral volcanic soil and the subtle influence of the local wood creates a wine that carries the soul of the region - authentic, precise and full of character.

Tasting Note

The Winkler-Hermaden Olivin 2021 has a deep ruby red colour with dark reflections in the glass. Pronounced cherry notes unfold on the nose, accompanied by fine vanilla, eucalyptus and subtle hints of wood. On the palate, it is powerful, complex and full-bodied, with notes of dark chocolate, sour cherry and a hint of spice. The tannins are velvety and well integrated, the structure dense and elegant. The finish is long-lasting, characterised by fruit and fine spice - a wine with impressive depth and ageing potential.

The Winkler-Hermaden Olivin 2021 is an ideal accompaniment to game dishes, steaks, rack of lamb with a herb crust or braised beef. It also unfolds its aromatic complexity perfectly with mature hard cheese or mushroom ragout. The optimum drinking temperature is 16-18 °C, and the wine can be drunk from 2027 to 2037.
