Not all bourbons are the same – within this traditional American whisky category, there are various types that differ in terms of production and maturation. The best-known type is Straight Bourbon, which must be aged for at least two years in new, charred oak barrels and must contain no additives. If it is aged for less than four years, the age must be stated on the label – a clear mark of quality for Purists.

Tennessee Whiskey is a special variety; technically speaking, it is also a bourbon, but it is additionally filtered using the so-called ‘Lincoln County Process’: the fresh whiskey drips through sugar maple charcoal, which gives it a particularly mild and smooth character. This filtering process and the strict designation of origin make Tennessee Whiskey – such as Jack Daniel’s – a distinct and protected variant of bourbon with an unmistakable character.
