The history of Japanese whisky began in the early 20th century and is closely linked to two visionary figures: Masataka Taketsuru, who learnt the art of whisky-making in Scotland, and Shinjiro Torii, the founder of Suntory. The Meiji Restoration, which opened Japan up to Western influences in the 19th century, also played a decisive role. It provided access to international techniques, which were further developed by Japanese distillers – a foundation upon which the industry continues to build to this day.

Japanese whisky is synonymous with finesse, balance and artisanal precision. It is characterised by the use of soft spring water, ageing in Mizunara oak casks (a rare Japanese oak variety with spicy, woody aromas) and delicate blending – often within a single group of companies. Japanese distilleries pursue a style all of their own, focusing on harmony and clarity without sacrificing complexity.

The style of Japanese whiskies ranges from light, floral and fruity to smoky and robust – depending on the distillery and maturation method. Common flavours include apple, pear, vanilla, white pepper, oak and a subtle smokiness. Thanks to the art of blending at the highest level, the result is finely balanced whiskies that can be enjoyed neat, in highballs or in cocktails.

Matsui produces impressive single malts and blends in Tottori, often in unusual casks such as sakura wood. Delicate aromas and modern approaches characterise the brand.

A distinctive feature in Japan is that all the whiskies in a blend usually come from the same distillery group. This allows producers to maintain maximum control over style, quality and balance – an approach that differs significantly from international practices and contributes to the clear, harmonious profile of Japanese blends.

Japanese distilleries draw inspiration from traditional Scottish production methods, but adapt them with great care – for example, by using different still shapes, long fermentation periods and rare oak casks such as Mizunara or Sakura. These impart subtly spicy, floral and exotic woody notes to the whisky that are rarely found anywhere else in the world.

The booming demand has led to the establishment of many new, small distilleries, which often specialise in creative concepts and limited editions. These projects – many of which feature organic production methods or unusual cask types – enrich the diversity of Japanese whisky and make it particularly exciting for enthusiasts and collectors.
