The makers of Ron Zacapa didn't have to think long about the name, as the first bottlings of the rum from Guatemala were launched on the occasion of Zacapa's 100th anniversary in 1976. From then on, there was no stopping this unique rum, which within a few decades had made its way out of its small town of origin and into the big wide world.
Ron Zacapa owes its incredible success to many factors, whereby the Zacapaneca distillery differs from many other rum producers in terms of the raw material alone. Instead of sugar cane molasses, boiled sugar cane syrup, known as virgin honey, is used for subsequent distillation. After this syrup has been fermented, it is then distilled in a pot still. After distillation, the young rum is taken up into the mountains, where the distillery's warehouses are located and a variety of different types of barrels are available.
