In 1749, the Italian Giacomo Justerini emigrated to London in a romantic mood to follow an opera singer with whom he had fallen in love. Together with George Johnson, he opened a grocery store in the same year, where he also sold liqueurs from his native Italy. Over the years, the company developed into a leading supplier of fine wines and spirits to Britain's aristocratic houses, with customers including King George III. In 1831, businessman Alfred Brooks bought the flourishing business, which has operated under the name Justerini & Brooks ever since. Far from being limited to two beautiful wine stores in London's St. James Street and Edinburgh's George Street, the business has continued to develop. Justerini & Brooks was initially part of the Grand Metropolitan Group with its spirits subsidiary International Distillers and Vintners (IDV). On their behalf, Justerini & Brooks managed several renowned distilleries such as Glen Spey, Knockando, Auchroisk and Strathmill in the Speyside whisky region. The complex, fruity J&B Justerini & Brooks blend became the company's best-known whisky and a global brand. Following a takeover by the Diageo Company with its subsidiary United Distillers and Vintners (UDV), which continued the tradition, the outstanding reputation of J&B Justerini & Brooks Rare Blended Scotch Whisky continued to develop as a modern, international blended Scotch - to the delight of J&B connoisseurs.
