Here one finds only a handful of malt distilleries. Compared to the rest of the country, the highest percentage of industrially run grain distilleries is found here. In terms of taste, Lowland Whisky Single Malts stand out for their lightness, freshness and low peat content. In general, single malts from this region are lighter in color and are reminiscent of Irish whiskies due to the three times distillation. Representatives of this category taste of sherry (Auchentoshan), spicy oak and plum aromas (Bladnoch) as well as a light sweetness with a complex aroma (Glenkinchie).
