Rum FAQs

Understanding Rum Made Easy.

Before you buy rum: Learn more about its origin

If you regularly buy rum, you might also want to learn something about its discovery. Christopher Columbus, the discoverer of America, played a decisive role in the history of rum. He brought the sugarcane plant to the North American island of Hispaniola, thus making the Caribbean the birthplace of rum. However, the origin of sugarcane is unclear. As early as the 1st century AD, the plant reached Europe via the Middle East. The plant was mainly cultivated in the Mediterranean region. Due to the popularity of sugar in Europe and the high yield from the sugarcane plant, it was cultivated on a large scale. Slaves were predominantly used for cultivation and harvesting.

The most important things about the Ambassador of Rum

The first widespread distribution of rum beyond the Caribbean began with the Royal Navy, the United Kingdom's naval warfare force. Various records show that as early as the mid-17th century, high-proof spirits were distilled from sugar scum on the island of Barbados and consumed on French ships off the coast of Jamaica. The Royal Navy, present there, noticed the constant high spirits among the French enemy and decided to keep their own sailors happy with the spirit, called "Kill Devil," from then on. Even today, you can still buy Kill Devil Rum. A century later, sailors had an official right to a daily rum ration. In Europe, rum only became more popular in the mid-19th century. This was mainly due to years of poor grain harvests and the associated raw material shortages.

Rum – The Accidental Product of Molasses

It was discovered by chance that a type of sugar wine could be produced from the byproduct molasses. In the late 17th century, people began to produce a spirit from this alcoholic waste product. If you buy rum today, it is only remotely comparable to the spirit of that time. It was not until the following century that distillation methods were refined. On the one hand, traditional pot stills gained increasing importance, and on the other hand, the invention of the column-shaped Coffey stills revolutionized distillation. The continuous distillation process made possible not only the production of Irish Whiskey but also rum production.

Countries of Origin for Rum

When you buy rum, the country of origin plays a crucial role, as it strongly influences the taste and quality of the rum. Although each country is known for certain rum styles, the flavors can vary from brand to brand. Here are the most important rum nations and their typical styles:

  • Cuba: Light, mild rum, ideal for cocktails like Mojito and Daiquiri.
  • Jamaica: Strong, intense rum with fruity and spicy notes, often enjoyed neat.
  • Dominican Republic: Smooth, sweet rum with vanilla and caramel notes, good for beginners.
  • Barbados: Versatile rum, ranging from sweet to spicy, ideal for aged varieties.
  • Guyana: Rich, sweet rum with notes of brown sugar and dried fruits.
  • Puerto Rico: Light, accessible rum, perfect for cocktails.
  • Martinique: Rhum Agricole, made from sugarcane juice, known for fresh, grassy aromas.

These descriptions summarize the typical flavors expected from rums from these regions. However, production methods and aging can influence the taste, so rum from the same region may also have atypical flavors. We also have a blog post about the Top 10 Countries of Origin for Rum that you might find interesting.

Classification of Rum

In our rum shop, we offer a diverse selection of high-quality rums for you to discover. To make your selection easier and help you find the right rum to buy, we present a clear classification of different rum types here. This will help you understand the most important quality characteristics and make informed decisions.

Rum Classification by Origin and Style

1. Martinique Rum (Rhum Agricole)
Martinique rum belongs to the special category of Rhum Agricole, which is made from fresh sugarcane juice instead of molasses. Thanks to its protected designation of origin "Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée" (AOC), this rum has clear quality levels:

  • White Rum (Rhum Agricole AOC blanc): Matures for at least 3 months in stainless steel vats and offers fresh, grassy aromas.
  • AOC (Rhum Paille/Rhum Ambré): Matured for at least 1 year in oak barrels, with more intense aromas of wood and spices.
  • Aged Rum (Rhum vieux agricole): Stored in oak barrels, subdivided into:VO (Very Old): Matured for at least 3 years.VSOP (Very Superior Old Pale): Matured for at least 4 years.XO (Extra Old): Matured for at least 6 years.Hors d'Age: Stored for 10 years or more, often with particularly complex aromas.

2. Jamaica Rum
Jamaica rum is known for its intense, spicy flavor and is often distilled using the "Pot-Still" method. High-quality Jamaica rum is a delight on its own, while cheaper varieties are often mixed or used in cocktails.

Rum Classification by Maturation Period and Quality

  • White Rum: Clear, young, and usually unaged, perfect for cocktails like Mojitos or Daiquiris.
  • Golden Rum: Lightly aged, with mild aromas of caramel and wood, popular both neat and in cocktails.
  • Dark Rum: Longer aged, more robust in flavor, with notes of molasses, spices, and dried fruits. Ideal for enjoying neat or in cocktails like the Dark 'n' Stormy.
  • Spiced Rum: Flavored with spices like vanilla, cinnamon, or cloves, intense and often sweeter in taste.

Further Rum Styles

  • Flensburger Rum-Verschnitt: In Germany, there is the popular Flensburger Rum-Verschnitt (Flensburg Rum Blend), which must contain at least 5% original rum. This blend consists of a mixture of rum, water, and neutral alcohol and is mostly used in cocktails.

Important Selection Criteria When Buying Rum

  • Quality: High-quality rum can be enjoyed neat, while cheaper varieties often come into their own better in cocktails.
  • Alcohol Content: Pay attention to the alcohol by volume. Some rums have a higher alcohol content and can taste more intense.

Many names, one product – buying rum for everyone

Blended Rum: A blend of several original rums. Original Rum: an imported original rum sold without further processing and with an alcohol content of up to 74% by volume. Real Rum: an imported original rum that has been reduced to at least 37.5% by volume. Flavoured Rum: refers to flavored rum with at least 37.5% by volume. This includes rum-based liqueur. Artificial Rum: also known as domestic rum, it is produced from sugar beet and flavorings. Overproof Rum: is often used for cocktail preparation and has an alcohol content of over 57.15% by volume. Rhum Agricole: refers to rum produced from agricultural sources, which is made in Haiti, the French Antilles, French Guiana, Réunion and Mauritius. Only fresh sugarcane juice is used for this. Rum Blend: Rum is mixed with neutral alcohol from other raw materials.

How is rum consumed?

A quality rum can be drunk neat, paying attention to long aging and the combination of flavors. Rum can also be combined, especially in mixed drinks and cocktails. For mixing, you should buy white rum that has not been aged for too long. Some well-known cocktails include Daiquiri, Piña Colada, or Mojito. A dark rum is more likely to be drunk in long drinks, although some cocktails are also suitable. The Caribbean aroma comes into its own particularly well in cocktails, such as Bahama Mama or Piña Colada. Overproof rum has a particularly high alcohol content and is excellent for cocktails.

How much does a good rum cost?

A bottle of rum varies in aging duration and quality, which is why there are different prices. You can buy an inexpensive white or brown rum for as little as 10 Euros. The relatively low price is achieved through large-scale production and efficient processes. An affordable rum usually has an alcohol content between 37.5 and 40 percent. Slightly more expensive varieties of this beverage are aged for a correspondingly longer period, resulting in a higher price. The aging period for mid-priced rum is usually around four years or even ten years. For a high-quality rum, the aging period is typically twenty years or more. This longer aging time develops a fine aroma, which is enhanced by frequent transfers to different barrels. You can also purchase very expensive rum in limited editions. In addition to rum, our online spirits shop also offers a wide range of exquisite whiskeys. From blended whiskey to single malt whiskey – feel free to browse!

As a price tip, here are some popular varieties – Buy the best rum now!

Rum Tasting and Taste Filter: Buying the Perfect Rum

When buying rum, it's often difficult to find the right variety from the large selection available. Flavor filters and rum tastings are two excellent ways to discover the ideal rum according to personal preferences.

Rum Tastings: Taste and Discover

Rum tastings offer the opportunity to get to know different varieties and compare their aromas. Especially for beginners, this is a good chance to try different rum styles such as white, golden, or aged rum. Even experienced connoisseurs often find new favorites at tastings.

Advantages of Rum Tastings:

  • Test various rums before buying.
  • Experience the diversity of aromas firsthand.
  • Receive personal recommendations from experts.

We have a large selection of rum sets, where you can slowly get acquainted and find your very individual taste. In our tasting shop, you will also find a wide selection of rum miniatures, which are ideal for testing different varieties before buying a larger bottle. Especially for rum beginners or connoisseurs who want to expand their collection, our miniatures are a practical and cost-effective option.

Taste Filters in the Online Shop: Targeted Selection

Those who want to buy rum online can quickly narrow down their selection with taste filters. Filter criteria such as flavor notes (fruity, spicy), aging period, or origin help to find suitable varieties. This saves time and leads directly to the rums that match one's preferences.

Typical Filter Criteria:

  • Taste: Sweet, fruity, spicy, smoky.
  • Aging Period: White, golden, aged rum.
  • Origin: Caribbean, South America, Europe.

Whether through a tasting or taste filters – both methods help to find the perfect rum. Taste filters enable a targeted selection, especially when buying online, and ensure that everyone can buy the ideal rum.

What is the conclusion on buying rum?

Rum originates from the Caribbean region and is excellent for mixing long drinks and cocktails. Brown rum is aged in wooden barrels, and white rum in stainless steel barrels. For special cocktails, you should buy an overproof rum, which has a high alcohol content. A long aging period is considered a mark of quality if this drink is to be enjoyed neat. In the tropical climate, this quality beverage develops a fine and soft aroma. We offer Puerto Rico rum, a selection of Caribbean rums, and rum from the Dominican Republic. For collectors and connoisseurs, a luxurious limited edition bottle might be an option. In addition to rum, you can also buy gin from us. Feel free to explore our rich assortment.
