Josef Umathum is nicknamed Pepi and is undoubtedly one of Austria's most influential winemakers. He is a pioneer of the Austrian red wine scene and has made a name for himself far beyond Austria's borders.
A lot has happened since the beginnings of the Umathum winery. The powerful, wood-influenced wines of the early days have given way to wines that show more elegance and finesse. However, they have not lost their juiciness and drinkability. For many years, sustainable working methods have played an increasingly important role in viticulture. Umathum therefore produces according to biodynamic principles, which is why cows and sheep are once again integrated into the winery and the vineyard.
Not least due to these changes, Umathum's wines have developed noticeably in recent years. They have become calmer and more complex. They also reflect their origins more clearly. The winery focuses on classic Austrian red wine varieties such as Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent. However, some white wines are also cultivated. More unusual varieties such as the Hungarian white grape variety Hárslevelü are also cultivated for Umathum's royal table wine.
The winery's most important vineyards are called "Haideboden", "Ried Hallebühl", "Kirschgarten" and "Vom Stein". This is also where the only stone terraces in Burgenland are located.
