The business in southern Styria has been around since 1870 and began with farming and a little wine. But then Hansi Schneeberger decided to break new ground. It started with a trip to Australia and a New Year's Eve celebration in a gin bar. Hansi was inspired to try it out for himself by an Australian who had started making gin in his garage on Kangaroo Island, which turned into a proper business. The successful recipe for Schneeberger gin that emerged after returning home consists of 27 botanicals. This is because the only two requirements for gin (in the EU) are It must contain juniper and at least 37.5 percent by volume. All other botanicals, the question of sweetening and how it is stored are decided by the respective distillery itself. These botanicals in Schneeberger gin include classics such as ginger, orange, pepper and coriander, as well as special regional plants such as Leutschach hops and Sausal lavender. After maceration, some botanicals are extracted during distillation, which gives the Styrian gin its character. After distillation and several weeks of storage in stoneware, it is reduced to drinking strength with soft spring water. Schneeberger gin then matures for eighteen months in French oak barrels. It is ideal for pure enjoyment and for cocktails such as gin and tonic, martini and Negroni.
