Fernet-Branca 35% vol. 1 l is one of Italy's most important bitter specialties and has been produced in Milan since the 19th century. The recipe goes back to a tonic developed by the Swedish doctor Fernet, which company founder Berardino Branca acquired and developed further. While the herbal elixir was initially used as a cure for cholera in 1836, it went on sale regularly from 1845 and became one of the best-known amari in the world over the following decades. Maria Scala, the widow of the then director Stefano Branca, made an important contribution to its international distribution. She turned Amaro into a global brand from 1893. The Maria Branca Scala Research Center still commemorates her commitment today and is dedicated to research into traditional medicinal plants.
A total of 27 herbs and spices are processed in the Fratelli Branca distillery, the exact composition of which remains a secret. However, ingredients such as aloe, cinchona bark, gentian, lemon root, iris, galanga, rhubarb, camomile, myrrh, cinnamon, saffron and lime blossom are known. After various macerations, the bitter matures for at least a year in large Slavonian oak barrels.
