Die Cuvée besteht aus den Rebsorten Shiraz, Grenache und Mataro (Mourvèdre). Die Trauben stammen von alten Reben, die teilweise über 60 Jahre alt sind und in verschiedenen Weinbergen im Barossa Valley kultiviert werden. Der Ausbau erfolgt für rund 12 Monate in einer Kombination aus neuen und gebrauchten amerikanischen sowie französischen Eichenfässern. Dies verleiht dem Wein Struktur, Tiefe und feine Röstaromen, ohne die sortentypische Frucht zu überlagern. Der Penfolds BIN 138 zeigt sich im Glas in einem tiefen Rubinrot mit purpurnen Reflexen. In der Nase entfalten sich Aromen von reifen Kirschen, dunklen Beeren und Pflaumen, begleitet von würzigen Noten wie Lakritz, schwarzem Pfeffer und mediterranen Kräutern. Am Gaumen wirkt er vollmundig, mit dichter Frucht, seidigen Tanninen und einer feinen Balance aus Frische, Würze und Holz. Der Abgang ist lang, harmonisch und vielschichtig.
Dieser Rotwein passt hervorragend zu kräftigen Fleischgerichten wie gegrilltem Rind, Lammkarree oder Wild. Auch zu Schmorgerichten, mediterranen Eintöpfen oder würzigen Pastagerichten mit Fleischsaucen entfaltet er seine volle Stärke. Käseliebhaber genießen ihn zudem mit gereiftem Hartkäse oder aromatischem Blauschimmelkäse. Serviert bei 16–18 °C zeigt er seine ganze Tiefe und ist damit sowohl für festliche Anlässe als auch für genussvolle Abende in geselliger Runde ideal geeignet.
