PUNI is the first and only whisky distillery in Italy, founded in 2010 by the Ebensperger family in Glurns, South Tyrol. Named after the nearby river Puni, the distillery combines traditional Scottish craftsmanship with Italian innovation. The use of local rye, wheat and barley as well as pure Alpine spring water from the Stelvio National Park gives the whisky its unique character.
The distillery is located in the Venosta Valley, a region with an ideal climate for maturing whisky. The temperature fluctuations between hot summers and cold winters accelerate the maturation process and ensure complex aromas.
PUNI uses traditional copper stills from Scotland and distils with superheated water instead of steam to ensure precise temperature control. Maturation takes place in a variety of casks, including ex-bourbon, sherry, Marsala and wine casks, resulting in a diverse range of flavors.
The striking bottles were created by Italian designer Christian Zanzotti and reflect modern Italian design. The distillery itself is an architectural highlight - a 13-metre high cube with a chessboard pattern, designed by architect Werner Tscholl.
PUNI emphasizes sustainability by using local grains and pure spring water. The distillery relies on environmentally friendly production methods and does not use artificial additives.
PUNI has received several international awards, including the "World's Best Design" award at the World Whiskies Awards 2016. The whiskies are appreciated by connoisseurs worldwide.
