Rhum Barbancourt - Haiti's liquid cultural heritage
Founded in 1862 by Dupré Barbancourt, an entrepreneur from the French Cognac region, Rhum Barbancourt combines French distilling tradition with Haitian passion. The distillery is located in the Cul-de-Sac plain near Port-au-Prince and is now run by the fifth generation of the family, Delphine Nathalie Gardère.
Region & origin
The sugar cane fields of the Domaine Barbancourt provide the raw material for the rum. Over 3,000 local farmers grow the special Haitian sugar cane variety "Madame Mevs", whose fresh juice forms the basis for the rum.
Production & craft
Unlike many Caribbean rums, Barbancourt is made from pure sugar cane juice, not molasses. The double distillation is carried out using the Charentais method, known from the production of cognac. The rum is then matured in French Limousin oak barrels, which gives it depth and complexity.
