Umathum Winery - biodynamic wines from the heart of Burgenland
Weingut Umathum in Frauenkirchen has been practicing pure viticulture since the 1980s - biodynamic and aligned with the rhythms of nature. Josef Umathum attaches great importance to healthy, humus-rich soil, manual labor and old vines - a concept for long-lasting, precise wines.
Region & origin
With around 45 hectares of vineyards on Lake Neusiedl, Umathum focuses on local red wine varieties such as Zweigelt, St. Laurent and Blaufränkisch (85%), complemented by dry white wines. Important sites include Haideboden, Ried Hallebühl, Vom Stein and the terraced vineyards in Joiser Kirschgarten - terroirs with their own character.
Production & craftsmanship
All grapes are hand-picked and harvested with a minimum yield. Cellar work is gentle, maturation mostly over three years in wooden barrels. Compost from cattle manure, biodynamic care and photovoltaic electricity for the winery underline the sustainable concept.
Varietal diversity & highlights
- Zweigelt, St. Laurent, Blaufränkisch: Taut, regional varieties, often as single-varietal wines or cuvées such as Haideboden.
- Haideboden® red wine cuvée: Zweigelt/Blaufränkisch/Cabernet Franc - dark fruity, peppery, robust.
- Ried Hallebühl Zweigelt: Delicate, elegant red wine from the historic "holy" hill.
- Kirschgarten Blaufränkisch: Terroir wine from the old terraces - powerful, mineral, long-lasting.
- White wines & specialties: Pinot Gris, Traminer, Gelber Muskateller, Beerenauslesen - precisely fruity.
Design & brand image
Modern, clear appearance in architectural and label design. The style combines tradition with sustainable elegance and reflects the diversity of the soil in the glass.
Sustainability & innovation
Biodynamics (Demeter), humus management, composting, solar energy and water management are integral components. Umathum takes responsibility for the climate and the region - also by reintegrating old vines.
Awards & reputation
Josef Umathum has been one of Austria's top winegrowers since the 1990s. The Kirschgarten, Hallebühl and Traminer in particular regularly achieve the highest ratings (Falstaff "Winemaker of the Year" 1990). Weingut Umathum is a member of the renowned Weingüter Burgenland.
