Kura whisky comes from the Helios Distillery on Okinawa and combines peaty Hokkaido malt with tropical maturation in a strong climate. It then receives its aromatic finish in decades-old rum or sherry casks - for a harmonious combination of smoke, fruit and exotic sweetness.
The distillery in Okinawa is known for rum, awamori and, since 1997, whisky. Kura is made from 100% malted grain, seasoned with peat from Hokkaido and matured at Okinawa's high temperature before being put into barrels.
Kura is based on a blend of matured malts, with peaty notes. After initial maturation in American oak, a further finish takes place in rum or sherry barrels - the cool maturation enhances the depth, while the tropical warmth balances it out.
Kura is recognized as a "Japanese Blended Whisky" and receives attention for its unconventional finishes. Reviews highlight the rum finish in particular as exciting and unique.
