American whisky is synonymous with diversity, tradition and character. The best-known varieties are bourbon, rye whisky, Tennessee whisky and corn whisky – each with its own specifications and flavour profiles. What they all have in common is that they are aged in new, charred oak barrels, which give the whiskies their characteristic colour and depth. Bourbon, in particular, must consist of at least 51% maize, whilst rye whisky is based on at least 51% rye. Tennessee whisky, on the other hand, is a bourbon that is additionally filtered through charcoal (charcoal mellowing). Corn whiskey contains at least 80% maize and is usually bottled without ageing or in used casks – a quintessentially American classic with a clean, sweet flavour.

Bottled-in-Bond – A special designation for whisky subject to strict US regulations (minimum 4 years’ ageing, 50% ABV, from a single distillery).

America is home to legendary whisky brands, whose histories often date back to the 18th century. Some of the most notable names:

• Jack Daniel’s – World-famous Tennessee whisky with a smooth texture and characteristic mellow flavour.
• Jim Beam – A classic from Kentucky, known for its straight bourbons with vanilla and woody notes.
• Wild Turkey – A spicy, robust bourbon with a high rye content and traditional production methods.
• Four Roses – Elegant, floral and complex – famous for its ten different mash bills.
• Buffalo Trace – Historic distillery with award-winning bourbons and ryes.
• Maker’s Mark – Mild, sweetish, smooth – known for its red wax collar.
• Woodford Reserve – Complex premium bourbons with deep aromas and a delicate balance.
• Bulleit – Rye-forward whisky with a distinct spiciness and modern design.

The origins of American whisky can be traced back to European immigrants, particularly those from Ireland and Scotland. During the 18th and 19th centuries, whisky became the country’s most important spirit. Prohibition (1920–1933) marked a major turning point – many distilleries disappeared, whilst some survived by producing medicinal products. Since the 1990s, American whisky has been experiencing a genuine revival, accompanied by rising quality, growing exports and a new craft whisky scene.

The production of American whisky is subject to clear legal regulations: the use of specified proportions of grain, distillation at less than 80% ABV, ageing in new barrels, and bottling at a minimum of 40% ABV. Processes such as sour mash (the addition of a portion of the previous ferment) ensure consistency and depth. Terms such as ‘Straight Bourbon’, ‘Bonded’ or ‘Single Barrel’ are subject to strict quality standards – a reliable seal of quality for connoisseurs.

American whisky culture is also shaped by moonshine – the illegal, often unregulated production of whisky during Prohibition. Today, ‘White Dog’ is sold as an unaged whisky straight from the still – clear, intense and authentic. This style is enjoying growing popularity, particularly in bars and the craft scene.
