Each of Scotland’s five main regions produces its own distinctive styles:

Scottish whiskies are usually matured in used oak casks, often made from American white oak (ex-bourbon) or European oak (sherry, port, wine). These casks impart vanilla, fruit, spice or nutty flavours to the whisky. Experimental cask maturations – such as those using rum, Marsala or red wine casks – also enrich the depth and variety of Scotch’s flavour profile.

Scotland’s terroir – that is, its climate, water, soil composition and humidity – has a decisive influence on the character of a whisky. Coastal location, the peat content in the soil and mineral-rich spring water all influence the range of flavours, as do the choice of cask and storage conditions. This results in a diversity of flavours that fascinates connoisseurs worldwide.

Scottish whisky differs from Irish whiskey in more than just the spelling. Whilst Irish whiskey is usually triple-distilled, in Scotland it is predominantly double-distilled. Furthermore, peaty smoke plays a greater role in the Scottish style, particularly on Islay. Both countries have their own legal regulations – in Scotland, for example, a minimum ageing period of three years in oak is mandatory, which significantly influences the whisky’s maturity and character.

• Adding a few drops of water to open up the aromas
• Allow time at room temperature – let the whisky ‘breathe’
• Taste from mild to full-bodied – ideally with a bite of bread or a sip of water in between

Scottish whisky – or Scotch – is synonymous worldwide with tradition, quality and diversity. The first documented reference dates back to 1496, when a monk named John Cor distilled ‘Aqua Vitae’ on behalf of the Scottish king – a milestone in the history of whisky production. By law , Scotch must be aged for at least three years in oak casks in Scotland, must not contain any colourings or flavourings (except E150a) and must be bottled at a minimum of 40% ABV. These strict regulations ensure consistently high quality and authenticity.
