Angostura
The company was founded by Johann Gottlieb Benjamin Siegert, who emigrated from Germany with his family in 1820 and settled in A*gostura, Venezuela. He served there as Dr. Siegert, chief surgeon in Simon Bolivar's army. In 1824, he developed a herbal liquor called AMARGO AROMATICO as a medicinal elixir for wounded soldiers.
In the middle of the 19th century, Dr. Siegert began to successfully market the herbal spirit as ANGOSTURA® Aromatic Bitter in the USA, England and the Caribbean. Even then, the world of cocktails was quickly conquered by the drink. Around 1875, the company relocated to Trinidad. The product receives a medal of excellence at the Vienna Exhibition in 1873 and a gold medal at the World Exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876. From 1900, the cocktail world flourished and the herbal spirit was unstoppable. The recipe is changed during Prohibition. The cocktail culture survives in bars outside the United States, for example in Paris. In 1912 and 1955, the brand receives an award from the English royal family. In the 1960s, a successful cookbook is published that uses the herbal spirit in everyday cooking. It was not until 2007 that the portfolio was expanded for the first time in 200 years with ANGOSTURA® Orange Bitter. Amaro di ANGOSTURA® is launched on the market in 2014. In 2018, renowned cocktail bars around the world honored ANGOSTURA® brandies as the top trend drink, as can be seen from an article in the Annual Bar Report, which depicts the purchasing habits of elite cocktail bars worldwide. In the same year, the herbal brandy received the platinum medal at the SIP Awards. ANGOSTURA® is a basic ingredient for cocktails such as the Old Fashioned, Manhattan or newer creations and gives them more depth and that certain something!
