General information about Bacardi rum

The Bacardi distillery was founded by Facundo Bacardí i Massó in Santiago de Cuba in 1862. Since its foundation, the distillery has been producing rum with a smooth and light-hearted taste. The sophisticated recipes, which differ from variety to variety, contribute to the smooth and carefree taste of Bacardi.

The Bacardi Carta Blanca, which is surprisingly mild compared to other white rums, is distilled no less than four times to achieve a high level of purity. Carta Blanca is also filtered five times over charcoal before maturing for a year in a barrel. The white rum is therefore a symbol of the elaborate production process behind most types of Bacardi rum.

In the production of Bacardi, sugar cane forms the basis of the rum, as is obligatory for rum production. To be precise, Bacardi, like most internationally renowned rum producers, does not make its rum directly from sugar cane juice, but from molasses. Molasses is a by-product from the processing of sugar cane into sugar.

By using molasses instead of sugar cane juice, the rum becomes less sweet, which is more than just right for many rum lovers. An interesting side note about Bacardi Rum: Facundo Bacardí i Massó's distillery, where Bacardi Rum is produced, housed a few bats in the rafters. In Cuban tradition, bats symbolize good luck, solidarity and health. The brand logo was therefore designed in the shape of a bat.

What types of rum can you buy from Bacardi?

Depending on the variety, Bacardi either bottles the rum directly after distillation or stores it in wooden barrels for a certain period of time. Rum that is bottled directly and not aged is white rum, while dark rum acquires its characteristic brown color through maturation in wooden barrels. White rum has a softer and sweeter taste than dark rum due to the direct bottling process. This makes white rum a popular base for various cocktails.

Bacardi offers a small range of white rum, dark rum and spiced rum. Probably the best-known rum is the aforementioned Carta Blanca, which smells of almonds and fruit on the nose.
